The drive from central New Jersey to JFK

From Branchburg, JFK is roughly 55 to 65 miles depending on the route. That distance is not the hard part; the bridges and expressways are. A trip that takes 90 minutes at 5 a.m. can take much longer on a Friday afternoon.

Route options: Staten Island or the Hudson crossings

The most common approach is across Staten Island via the Goethals Bridge and the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, then the Belt Parkway toward the airport. The alternative is a Hudson crossing into Manhattan and on through Queens. Which is faster changes hour to hour, so we check traffic on the day and pick the better one.

Know your JFK terminal before the day

JFK is not one building. It has several separate terminals spread around a central area and linked by the AirTrain, and parts of the airport have been under construction as terminals are rebuilt. Dropping off at the wrong one can mean a long walk or a train ride with your bags.

• Check your terminal number on your booking or the airline's app a day or two before.
• If your ticket is with a partner airline, confirm which carrier operates the flight, since that decides the terminal.
• If two people in your group are on different airlines, tell us both terminals and we will make two stops.

Construction can also change curb layouts and approach roads, which is another reason we leave a cushion in the schedule.

Peak travel seasons and JFK

Summer, school breaks and the days around major holidays are the busiest times for international travel from New Jersey, and the roads to JFK feel it. On those dates:

• Book early. A JFK run ties up the car for a good part of the day, so busy dates fill up.
• Consider the flight time itself. An evening departure often means leaving New Jersey into the afternoon rush.
